By Nordic Food Lab : Squeaky Cheese

The Quebecois love their squeaky cheese. All those French speakers in eastern Canada know these very fresh cheese curds that whine surprisingly under the teeth. The worst part? Translated directly, these delicacies are called “cheese shit”, from the Quebecois “crottes de fromage”, because of their appealing shape.

They are also the key ingredient in a typical fast-food dish that is strongly attached to Quebecois culture: poutine. As a Quebecois, I was asked to prepare this legendary meal for my colleagues. Most of the time, this high-caloric meal is composed of french fries (deep-fried in old oil), squeaky fresh cheese curd and gravy (from powder). At the lab, however, we like to begin from scratch – so the potatoes were cut, parboiled, and deep-fried in fats we clarified from different meats, the gravy was from a delicious duck stock and leftover mushrooms, and the cheese, clearly, was homemade.

Temple Grandin Film Tonight!

Temple Grandin is a 2010 biopic directed by Mick Jackson and starring Claire Danes as Temple Grandin, an autistic woman who revolutionized practices for the humane handling of livestock on cattle ranches and slaughterhouses.

And that is all we are going to tell you about this magnificent movie. This is not a movie about cooking, not one about chefs, its much more than that. It’s about what comes first. It is about the other side of this coin called gastronomy. It depicts the hidden story behind every bite we take and every “delicious” expression you exclaim. Not a documentary, not a fictional testimony, but a real life story made into a film.

If your curiosity about this incredible woman is still not enough to drag you over the gastronomic society this thursday at 20.30, just let us tell you that you will not only have free popcorn and wine as always, but you will enjoy the first open-air food film club of this year. As summer decided to come a little late this year, we made our minds to kick winter the hell out of this university.

Food Film Club Presents:

Did anyone else notice a little frost on the grass this morning? Yup, it’s that time of year again. A winter chill is creeping in and the nights are getting longer. It’s time to cuddle up with friends, blankets, a glass of something warming, and a darn good movie.

Conveniently enough…

The next Food Film Club is on Thursday November 15th at 19.30!!

Our movie: Io Sono L’Amore (I Am Love)

I am Love

Much like the star of the movie, Tilda Swinton, this movie is unsettlingly beautiful. Set between Milan and somewhere in the Italian countryside, the movie follows our complex heroine’s transition from the gilded cage of upper-class Italian family life, to a more expressive existence with her chef-lover. Food is the medium bringing her out of her shell. But this is no romantic portrayal of Italian cuisine. Just like the people, sex, soundtrack and relationships in this movie, food is alternately challenging, raw, graphic and beautiful. This is a must see.

Come join us! Bring a cushion and get cozy…

Thursday November 15th at 19.30, Via Vittorio Emanuale 207 (Bianca Bonetti’s apartment)

As always, FFC is FREE & OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS

Free wine and popcorn. Feel free to bring your own drinks and food, too.

Please bring a cushion to sit on!!

Unitevi a noi!! Portate un cuscino e mettetevi comodi..

Gioved’ 15 Novembre alle 19.30, Via Vittorio Emanuale 207 (appartamento di Bianca Bonetti)

Come sempre, il FFC è GRATIS e APERTO A TUTTI GLI STUDENTI.

Vino e popcorn gratis. Portate pure i vostri drink e spuntini personali.

E non dimenticate il cuscino per sedervi!!

Tomorrow night: Food Film Club Presents

Eat, Drink, Man, Woman

It’s official! The ASSG Food Film Club has been launched. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first screening. We gathered under the stars with abundant popcorn, wine and some other delicious contributions, to watch the fantastic ‘Big Night’ by director Stanley Tucci.

If you couldn’t make it and missed seeing the famous omelet scene, or the making of a stunning Timpano, never fear! We’ll be hosting the next FFC screening on Thursday July 19th at 9pm, with Ang Lee’s, ‘Eat Drink Man Woman’.

This critically acclaimed film explores complex family relationships through food and appetite, following the lives of the greatest chef in Taipei and his three daughters. As with ‘Big Night’, subtleties of expression are conveyed in food preparation with sensitivity and to pleasurable effect. By all accounts, especially this one.

It’s a must see. And if you’re not already sold, read this:

“Intermingling a sexual episode with a glimpse of Mr. Chu blowing air into a duck, Mr. Lee often makes his characters seem oblivious in certain basic ways.”

Now you’re intrigued, right?

So, come and join us.
Thursday July 19th, 9pm, Via San Germano 14.
Free to all students!
Wine and popcorn are provided for free, but please bring your own, too, if you wish.
Blankets, pillows and mosquito protection are recommended!!

E ‘ufficiale!

Ora sei incuriosito, vero?

Quindi, venite e unitevi a noi.

Giovedi 19 Luglio 09:00, Via San Germano 14.
